Ushuaia, the provincial capital, is located on the banks of the Beagle Channel and surrounded by the Martial mountain range in a bay of remarkable beauty protected by the winds. According to 2004 figures, the population of Ushuaia is 58,898 inhabitants. Its name derives from the yamana language and it means “bay overlooking the West.” Ushuaia has a surface area of 9,390 sq. km (including Staten Island and the Beagle Channel). The shores of the Beagle Channel and the Martial mountain range provide this city with a natural beauty. This is the southernmost City in the world.
It offers a unique landscape in Argentina through a combination of mountains, seas, glaciers and forests.
